(Review is for the first two seasons only.) I came into this show not expecting to like it, but the plot, acting, and cinematography are superb. It’s basically Mafia Wars in Montana with intermittent giant doses of testosterone (cowboys with guns on horses fishing)! Costner is a master actor in the lead role of the Duttons.
The show stalls at the beginning of season 2, but picks up again halfway through
The show is at its best when it shows the chessboard moves that the Duttons and their enemies engage in. Kelsey Asbille is the weak link as Monica and plays a bad hand poorly, the plot falls apart awkwardly and the acting just misses the mark. I think Cole Hauser as Rip may be the strongest actor (other than Costner himself) and I couldn’t wait to see every scene Rip was in.
Thomas Rainwater is also fantastic
The plot hums and the scenery is beautiful. Just as Cormac McCarthy’s “All The Pretty Horses” was a little more raw and brutal than the title suggests, this show hits the mark in a similar way. I highly recommend it and wish I hadn’t waited so long to watch it.
